Techniques Tuesday - Layering with Watercolor

As we continue to explore watercolors, in week 2 we invite you to try some different types of layering with your chosen medium. Here are a few short videos as a guide - but play with your watercolors and let your imagination take you wherever feels right!

Create a page by layering lots of the same shape, choosing a different color for each new layer. Try complimentary colors, contrasts, warm colors, cool colors; triangles, squares, circles, stars - the possibilities are endless! See how each layer builds your page into something new. Remember to let each layer dry to prevent the colours bleeding into each other.

For a mountain range landscape background, paint a mountain shape, gradually filling less of the page with each layer. But it doesn’t have to be a realistic mountain range that you’d find in nature! Choose your favorite color to build an abstract “mountain” range in brights, pastels, or neons. You could then complete your page by adding doodles, words, or collage to the layers - or tiny mountain goats!

Experiment with layering gradually deeper shades of the same colour in concentric circles/shapes to create these fun geodes:

Have fun experimenting with watercolor layering and don‘t forget to share the results with us on Instagram - @united_artists_collective - we can’t wait to see what you come up with!
